Best Lip Balm for Chapped Lips
When cold weather and indoor air leave your lips dry and cracked, fight back with products designed especially for moisturizing as well as protecting against further dryness. According to Good Housekeeping, “Emollients replenish lost moisture, and occlusives work to prevent further moisture loss.” If you’re reading this, you probably want a lip balm that replenishes and occludes.
Good Housekeeping, doesn’t rate products based on payola with paid reviews. They actually go to the science behind products and test them independently. According to their lab director, Birnul Aral, Ph.D., lip skin is unlike the rest of your birthday suit which contains 15-16 dermatological layers. The mouth only contains 3-4, making it especially vulnerable to becoming chapped. Follow this link to get Good Housekeeping’s top 12 lip balms out of 175 tested products for lips.
Mental Cheesecake tested three lip balms with emollient and occlusive properties: Burt’s Bees Coconut & Pear Lip Balm, eos Organic Sweet Mint Lip Balm, Simple Truth Honey Vanilla Organic Moisturizing Lip Balm. In addition, we also tested the use of straight vitamin E and hyaluronic acid by opening gel caps and applying directly to lips.
While the Simple Truth and Eos products provided effective moisture and protection, only Burt’s Bees Coconut & Pear Lip Balm delivered an added supple smoothness that lasted hours with a cumulative effect noticed after continued use. As for opening gel caps and applying vitamin E and hyaluronic acid, although helpful, this is not an on-the-go solution for chapped lips.
A note about hyaluronic acid. The effect is lovely. If you decide to give it a try, add water to the goo squeezed from gel caps since it holds a whopping amount of water and leaves skin feeling smooth and fresh. For hyaluronic acid’s many benefits, click here.
